If there’s one piece of clothing that has surprised me this season, it would be just how popular sweater dresses have become. Don’t get me wrong — I don’t have anything against the piece — I just always thought they were pretty basic (aka not something you all were looking for.) However, after wearing a few on repeat, I’ve heard lots of feedback on how much you’re loving them.
I realized that the very fact that they are basic is what makes them so appealing. They’re easy to throw on during busy mornings, they can be worn from day to night, and they’re undoubtedly comfortable. Sweater dresses provide a clean slate for you to mix and match with various accessories, shoes, and layers, and it’s that versatility that’s such a big draw.
While I love a well styled outfit, there’s also something to be said about simplicity. Sometimes, you’re just not in the mood to put together an elaborate outfit — and that’s okay. Sweater dresses are a good go-to in those instances, and even though they offer a more streamlined look, they still read very chic.
Here, I’m highlighting a handful of ways you can style a sweater dress. From adding jackets to switching out your shoes, you’ll be hooked on this wardrobe staple in no time!
Watch Here: An Office-Appropriate Sweater Dress Outfit
The ultimate easy-to-throw-on outfit? A sweater dress with a pair of ballet flats. This duo is a fool-proof choice for several seasons: fall, spring, and even early summer. The exact sweater dress I’m wearing has so many details that make it unique: a drop sleeve fit, cinched waist, and side slits. Pair it with flats results in a feminine and sophisticated look.
These ballet flats have been my favorite as of late. Many of the options out there just aren’t comfortable (digging into your heels, slipping off your foot, etc.) but I’ve had really good luck with these. They fit TTS and they come in a few neutral colors.
If you’re dressing for cooler weather, opt for boots as your shoe of choice. Whether you’re into tall boots or ankle booties, both look stylish when paired with a sweater dress. Plus, going with a heeled option can make things a bit more flirty (while offering you some extra height.) I’d wear this combo on a date night, to a dinner with friends, or even to a work meeting. I’m linking some of my favorite dress and boot combos below!
Looking for a way to “fancy up” a sweater dress? Adding a blazer is one route you could go. I have personally been loving the look of oversized blazers lately — they offer a more modern and trendy touch than the fitted options out there. This is the exact blazer I’m wearing below, but if you’d prefer a more budget-friendly dupe, I also own this one and it’s under $60!
You could reach for this outfit for work occasions, office parties, or for a more elevated night out look. Style it with ballet flats, boots, or loafers — the options are endless.
When dressing for transitional seasons, layering is key. Whether you’re wearing a sleeveless sweater dress or something more cozy (like a turtleneck find) adding a coat is both practical and chic.
One thing to keep in mind: Opt for a coat that’s longer than your sweater dress to avoid your outfit from falling flat. If you chose a coat that hits right where your sweater dress does, it can be difficult to differentiate the pieces from each other. To avoid this, go with a coat that’s either longer or shorter than where your dress hits. It’s a small detail but it can make a huge impact in the end result.
The soft and feminine look of a sweater dress paired with the more edgy feel of a leather jacket makes for a visually interesting (and unexpected) outfit choice. Leather jackets are a staple that most people already have in their closet, so this look should be a simple one to pull off.
Another perk: This combo can work for both laid-back and more dressy occasions! I’m currently eyeing this leather jacket, which has a classic shape with unique detailing.
