Winter Coat Guide: The Best Winter Coats for Women

post featured image post featured image

Two things that go hand-in-hand? Winter and a quality coat — you simply can’t get through the season without this warm and cozy layer. Winter coats are essential in every wardrobe, whether you live somewhere that sees freezing temps or you’re lucky enough to experience mild weather. With that being said, finding the right winter coat can be a particularly daunting task (one that’s a universal experience.)

There are so many different styles of coats and jackets out there, making it hard to sort through them all and feel confident about what you land on. There are different fabrics, cuts, and vastly unique price points. Do you splurge on a down jacket or go with the budget-friendly wool blend option?

Most of the choices out there are solid (as long as you go with something quality), and my opinion is that the more variety you can have, the better. For example, you might want a thick puffer coat for snow days while a lighter weight rain jacket might come in handy as we get closer to the spring. From cropped finds and faux fur styles to maxi coats and hooded jackets, I’m rounding up a handful of my favorites here. Whether you’re in need of a closet overhaul or you’re simply hoping to freshen up your look, consider this your go-to guide for all things winter coats!

Best Faux Fur Jacket: Bernardo Faux Fur

If there’s one coat that has been a total standout this year, it’s this faux fur coat. It consistently made my bestseller list week after week, and I’m honestly shocked that it’s not sold out. It’s currently marked on, so take that as a sign that you need to snag it!

I have worn it with several outfits this fall and winter, and I know it will be a solid option to wear come early spring. It’s easy to dress up or down and I really appreciate that it has a zipper so you can bundle up on extra cool days. Also, this brown hue is super trendy right now but it also comes in cream and a bright pink color.

Best Down Jacket: Varley Fullerton Down Jacket

Looking for an elevated take on a classic puffer jacket? This would be my top suggestion. I treated myself to this piece this winter and have loved wearing it on extra nippy days. Puffer jackets tend to look bulky and frumpy, but this one has a more streamlined shape (making it more flattering.)

Another aspect I adore about this coat is that it comes in such a unique color. The brand notes it as “French Roast” but I feel like it has a slight tint of rich purple — so pretty and cheerful on dreary days!

Best Down Jacket [Runner Up]: Varley Roseville Down Jacket

This oversized puffer jacket is about as classic as it gets. It’s filled to the brim with insulating down, ensuring you stay nice and toasty despite the elements. It also has a cropped silhouette so it’s shaped more boxy than bulky. Little details like a sherpa collar and front flap pockets give it lots of personality while the neutral cream color guarantees you can wear it with any outfit.

Best Wool Coat: Reiss Wool Blend Camel Coat

For a layer that will seamlessly take you from fall to spring, consider this camel coat. Everything from the rich color to the tailored fit makes it a timeless and elevated pick. I fell for it because of the trench-coat style and the tie waist detailing. It looks incredibly chic paired with jeans, a sweater, and ankle booties, but it also can be paired with more casual outfits.

I know this coat is a splurge, but if you like the look, there are tons of similar options out there!

Best Rain Jacket: Lululemon Rain Rebel Jacket

Believe it or not, this rain jacket was one of the KSD 2024 top sellers! So many of you have added it to your cart, and all have been just as impressed as I have. It’s such a great option to have in your closet because you can easily layer chunkier knits underneath it, or you could wear it on warmer days as a light jacket option. Plus, it’s an obvious go-to on cloudy (or even snowy) days.

Another perk: This jacket can be folded down so small that it’s a stellar choice to pack for a trip!

Best Puffer Jacket: Moncler Cochevis Short Down Jacket

If you’re open to investing in a jacket that will ultimately last a lifetime, this Moncler pick should be at the top of your list. I’ve had mine for years now and can honestly say it’s worth every penny. Not only does it keep you warmer than any other option out there, but it’s a piece that you can wear daily in the winter (and not get sick of.) It’s stylish, well made, and classic. I know I will be passing this one on to my kids!

Best Hooded Jacket: Max Mara GreenMo Insulated Hooded Jacket

It can be oddly difficult to find an insulated jacket with a hood. This one is a more recent purchase of mine, but it’s something I can’t imagine my wardrobe without now. The rich caramel color is what originally won me over, but I’m also a big fan of the length (not too long and not too short) and fabric. The hood is an added bonus — one that’s highly appreciated when the wind is blowing or the snow is falling.

Best Oversized Faux Fur Jacket: L’Academie Gamine Faux Fur Jacket

Faux fur jackets always seem to be a big hit each winter, and this one has been the top choice of the season! It’s perfectly oversized and packs a ton of personality. So many of you have loved it as well, so it’s a bit picked over (but regularly gets restocked!) I’d wear this one on a winter date night, girls night out, or even to the office. Trust me, you’ll be so excited to break this layer each winter.

Best Wool-Blend Top Coat: Abercrombie Tailored Top Coat

Last but not least, no closet would be well-rounded without a simple tailored coat. The exact jacket I’m wearing in the photo below is unfortunately sold out, but I still wanted to include this here as inspo. I’m linking a very similar (and more affordable) option from Abercrombie. I think this specific pick would be ideal for more mild climates and spring wear. The versatility can’t be beat!
