Most of us don’t exactly enjoy overnight flights, but when you’re traveling internationally, it’s pretty much a given that you’ll need to get at least some shut-eye. But let’s be honest: Planes don’t really make the most comfortable or practical space to get a decent dose of rest. However, keeping up with your regular routines is important for your overall travel experience (to curb jet lag for one!)
Over years of traveling regularly, I feel like I’ve finally nailed my overnight flight routine. While it varies depending on where I’m heading, what time my flight is, and how long I’ll be traveling, the core elements always stay the same: wear a comfy outfit, pack travel-sized beauty products, and stock up on cozy essentials.
Whether you’re venturing off on a lengthy overnight flight or you’re going international for the first time, my hope is that these tips help you get there as comfortably as possible!

This should be a no-brainer but every comfortable flight starts with a cozy outfit. Some of my top picks are fleece sets, leggings and a tee, or even jumpsuits (as long as they’re roomy!) I’m a really big fan of the matching sets from Frank & Eileen because they’re super soft and they take the guesswork out of getting ready. They are a bit of an investment but I promise they are pieces you’ll have for years to come. White sneakers or slides are two good shoe options but it really comes down to your personal preferences.
p.s. If you’re looking for a quality suitcase recommendation, I have had this duo for years and have been thoroughly impressed by how well it’s held up.

I know you might think this step is a little bit *extra* but trust me when I say you’ll be so grateful you didn’t skip this upon arrival. While it’s not an option to do your regular skincare routine, there are plenty of mini sized products that can help you achieve a condensed version of your regimen.
I personally love beauty mists and lightweight oils, both which are easy to apply and don’t require a sink or a wash cloth. I start with this water-to-oil serum that’s ultra-hydrating and soothing. It comes in a mini size and feels so luxe (even when you’re on a plane!) Just press it into your skin so you wake up moisturized and plump.
Next, spritz yourself with this Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist which provides antioxidant protection and almost feels like you’re washing your face. Tatcha is one of my favorite skincare brands and they have a variety of mini sized products that are ideal for travel days. You can read my full review of the brand here.
For an added dose of hydration, I like to apply a small amount of this oil to my skin. It’s another one of my go-to products regardless of if I’m traveling, but I’ve found it to be especially handy when my skin needs some extra love. Tip: Apply it to your neck as well!
Another option that I reach for during flights is the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. I like it because you can use it as a leave-on mask and it almost feels like a leveled up moisturizer. You can also apply it to your hands or anywhere that’s dry!
When it comes to skincare (yes, even in flight), don’t neglect your hands! My skin tends to get dry post-travel so I like to get ahead of the issue by applying cream while I’m in the air. This one works wonders on hands and cuticles and has an ultra-rich consistency for maximum results.
Another spot you’ll want to offer some TLC? Your lips! This balm might seem particularly luxe for in-flight application but it’s a recent favorite of mine that I can’t stop using. It comes in color options as well but I find that the white/clear is best for travel.
Stash all of these skincare essentials in a toiletry case and place it in your carry-on for easy toting (it’s also nice to have them packed in a carry-on in the event that you lose your luggage!)
When you want to score some shut-eye during a flight, an eye mask is pretty much a non-negotiable. This one is worth every single penny. I’ve tried several over the years and none compare to this one — many of them just don’t stay in place, they aren’t soft, or they leave a crease in your hair.
I also came across this fuzzy Barefoot Dreams travel set (shown below) during the Nordstrom sale and thought it was so practical and cute! It comes with a pair of socks, an eye mask, and a little travel case.
There’s no denying that planes can get quite chilly. Even if you’re traveling during a warmer season (or to a warm destination) I promise that a scarf will come in handy. It’s so nice to have something to snuggle up with during a long-haul flight. Not a scarf person? Try a little travel blanket, like this one, which folds up easily and can fit into a carry-on bag.
When it really comes down to it, the most important tip I can offer when you’re prepping for an overnight flight is to create your own little oasis. I know this might be easier said than done, but even small tweaks — like packing noise-cancelling headphones — can be a game changer.
If you’re sensitive to sound, I’d highly recommend looking into getting a pair before you jet off! Even if you just use them to play white noise, you’ll likely get more deep and quality rest than you would without them.
