We are fully immersed in peak travel season, and I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’ve been on the go constantly. Between family vacations and weekend getaways, this time of year is always so special — but boy is it busy!
Since I have been traveling a lot since the summer kicked off, I feel like I’ve officially nailed down my go-to travel outfits.
Every experienced traveler knows that a comfortable outfit is crucial to the overall success of your time in the air or on the road. I mean, the last thing you want is to board a plane or be stuck in a car while you’re wearing something that’s less than cozy.
However, when it comes to putting together the ideal travel day look, the summer heat and humidity can make things tricky. You likely don’t want to reach for your typical leggings or sweatpants (too hot!) but you also might not want to wear a dress, or even shorts.
Below, I’m rounding up a handful of summer travel outfits that take the temperature and different types of trips into consideration. Whether you’re heading on a lengthy international flight or you’re taking a road trip, these looks will help you get there in style.
When all goes as planned, traveling domestically should hypothetically be a breeze. Yet with layovers and possible flight delays, what starts as a short travel day can turn into quite the process. That’s where this outfit comes into play — it’s perfect for all-day wear and will help you look polished and put together without sacrificing comfort.
Start with a pair of linen pants, which are great for the summer because they’re lightweight and breathable. Next, add a crewneck t-shirt on top for a simple and timeless look (stripes can add some fun visual interest!) Finish things off with a tote bag filled with your in-flight essentials, a hat to cover up un-styled hair, and some white sneakers.
Tip: Wear your clunkiest pair of shoes on the plane to save room in your suitcase. During the summer months, sneakers are often the biggest space taker, so wearing them while traveling is a smart choice.
While I haven’t been on many road trips lately, I know that they are a popular choice for travelers. Regardless of who you’re venturing out with, I can see why this mode of transportation is preferred. You avoid the airport craziness, it can be a more affordable option, it makes for a fun experience — the list goes on.
When it comes to what to wear on a road trip, I feel like there are more options. My first choice would be a soft and roomy jumpsuit, like this find from Abercrombie. The elastic waistband makes it easy to slip on and off during any stops you make along the way, and it’s a piece that you can seamlessly add layers to if needed. I’d go with a denim jacket or even a knit cardigan if you think you might get chilly!
For shoes, I have been loving these Birkenstock sandals. They’re the ideal pick for a road trip because once again, they’re easy to slip on and off. Oh, and I’m also loving this weekender bag, which looks like just the right size for a short getaway.
Not heading far? For short drives or train rides, consider opting for shorts as your base layer. I’ve found that wearing shorts on a plane isn’t always ideal, but when you’re staying locally, they can be a great option!
This linen pair hits right at the mid-thigh, offering a cute length that’s practical for wearing from day to night. On top, go with this sleeveless half-zip sweater for a breezy choice that adds a pop of color. Not only is this ultra-cozy but it will also make for a great piece to transition into the fall months.
Since you won’t be running around the airport, sandals would be a-okay. This is a favorite pair of mine from Nordstrom and these are a nearly identical Amazon dupe. Accessorize with a striped tote bag and some sunglasses and you’ll be ready to head out the door!
Everything about international travel requires more planning and more thought, but don’t let this intimidate you! Long-haul flights are really the most important flights to choose a comfortable outfit for. As a general rule of thumb, just be sure to avoid anything that’s tight, sticky, or hard to get on and off.
My suggestion? This travel set from Frank & Eileen. While it’s definitely more of a splurge, I can tell you firsthand that it’s a great investment piece that you’ll reach for every time you travel. It’s made with a fleece material that is somehow still breathable in the warmer weather. Plus, it’s nice to have something a bit more “warm” to wear considering how cold it can get on an airplane.
Tip: Bring a travel scarf with you on your flight (yes, even during the summer!) They’re a light accessory that you’ll be grateful you can cozy up with when the air conditioning is cranking.
